Lesson 5: Matthew 3; Mark1; Luke 3

January 28- February 3
Matthew 3; Mark 1; Luke 3
Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord

Opening Song: "When Jesus Christ was Baptized" (Children's Songbook, 102)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: 2 Nephi 31:5 And now, if the Lamb of God, he being holy, should have need to be baptized by water, to fulfil all righteousness, O then, how much more need have we, being unholy, to be baptized, yea, even by water!

Attention Activity:

Do the following object lesson in the kitchen of your home. This object lesson is taken from HudsonHeadlines.blogspot.com: "For the lesson, I held up 2 pennies, one shiny and new, and one dirty and tarnished.  Each kid got a tarnished penny and I explained that although we come to this life clean and pure, we make mistakes along the way.  But through the blessing of baptism, we can be washed clean of our sins through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Then they each dropped their pennies in this solution- 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt, and the tarnish disappeared.  The pennies were shiny and new again." ("FHE Lesson- Baptism", July 19, 2011).

Lesson:

Baptism is an ordinance. It helps us to become clean so, we can live with Heavenly Father again after we die. Heavenly Father has commanded that everyone needs to be baptized in order to live with him again.

When Jesus was about 30, his cousin,  John the Baptist, had been teaching people and baptizing them.  Jesus came to John and asked to be baptized. Read Matthew 3: 13-17. John did not understand why Jesus wanted to be baptized. Jesus did not need to be baptized because he never sinned. He was perfect. Jesus answered John by saying he needed to be baptize to "fulfill all righteousness." What does that mean? Jesus wanted to be baptized because Heavenly Father commanded that everyone should be baptized. He wanted to be an example for us.

Optional: Show the video "The Baptism of Jesus"

Give each member of your family a copy of the table below from the "Come Follow Me" manual. Have each family member it out. Then, talk about the similarities between Jesus's baptism and their own.

Read Luke 3: 15-16. Explain after we are baptized with water we receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, which is baptism by fire. Fire, like water, has cleansing properties. Doctors use it to sterilize tools and to get rid of bacteria. Fire purifies and refines. When we are confirmed by members of the Melchizedek priesthood, we are given the Gift of the Holy Ghost. We will talk more about the Holy Ghost in other lessons.

We've already talked about how baptism makes us clean and washes away our sin. How do we stay clean after we are baptized? Repentance is what we do to become clean after we are baptized so that we can live with Heavenly Father again. We should repent daily as we make mistakes and remember our covenants we made at baptism when we take the sacrament every week.

Bear your testimony of your own baptism. If you want, share pictures from your baptism or the baptisms of members of your family. When we choose to be baptized, we follow the example of the Savior and prepare ourselves to enter into Heavenly Father's presence.
