Lesson:

This week, we are going to move on from the more poetic books of the Bible and on to the writings of the prophets in Old Testament times. Keep in mind that these prophets lived in the Southern Kingdom of Judea during times we've already discussed this year.

The prophet's writings we are going to study first are probably the most important. For the next few weeks, we are going to talk about the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet that lived during the time of King Hezekiah. In 2 Kings 19, we read that Isaiah counseled the King when he was facing the threat of the Assyrian armies.

Isaiah is the most quoted prophet, he was often quoted by Jesus Christ. And whole chapters of Isaiah are expounded by Nephi in The Book of Mormon. Isaiah's words can be sometimes hard to understand. He uses a lot of symbols and metaphors to teach. Isaiah's book prophecies of Christ and the atonement. It also talks about the scattering and gathering of Israel, the last days, and the second coming. All of things are very important to latter-day saints living during the gathering of Israel.

Show the picture below. This man on the right of the picture is Isaiah. He is shown to be writing about the family on the top left. Who are they? Have your family members share what they remember about the Nativity story. This week we will read how Isaiah prophecies about the birth and coming of Jesus Christ.

Activity: Isaiah crossword

Directions: Pass out the crossword below to each family member. Using their scriptures, family members can use the clues to fill in the crossword. Isaiah 9:6 has a long list of names for Christ that can be used to fill in those squares.

What was something that Isaiah projected about the Savior? Have a family member share their favorite story about Jesus.

Bear your testimony of Jesus Christ.
