Lesson 14: Matthew 16-17; Mark 9; Luke 9

April 1-14
*General Conference is April 6-7. The Come Follow Me For Individuals and Families has this lesson scheduled for April 1-14. You can take choose to do this lesson at any point during those two weeks. I will probably do a family game night or activity for our FHE the other week.
Matthew 16-17; Mark 9; Luke 9
"Thou Art the Christ"

Materials:

Opening Song: "The Priesthood is Restored" (Children's Songbook, 89)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Attention Activity:

Show a picture of safety deposit boxes like the one on this link. This picture is of safety deposit boxes. Safety deposit boxes are little safes you can rent inside the vault of a bank. How many locks are on each box? How do you open a lock? Each safety deposit box needs two keys to open. The first key is given to the person that rents the box. The second key is the bank managers key. This key is special because this key can open all of the safety deposit boxes. It's a master key.
This is kind of like the priesthood. There is one person who holds all of the keys to the priesthood. Other people also hold keys for their individual jobs, but only one person holds all the keys.

Lesson:

One day Jesus was talking with his apostles. He told Peter, "thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever shall be loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matt. 16:18-19)

"The keys of the kingdom of heaven that the Savior promised to give Peter are the priesthood keys. Priesthood keys are the authority God has given to priesthood leaders to direct, control, and govern the use of His priesthood on earth" (Come Follow Me Manual, 55).

About a week later Jesus gave the priesthood keys to Peter, James, and John on a mountain. Show the following video Chapter 33: Appearing in Glory: The Transfiguration

After Christ's death the apostles used the priesthood keys to direct the Church. After the apostles died the priesthood was taken from the Earth. In 1836 Jesus, Moses, and Elias appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the temple to restore the priesthood keys to the earth. (D&C 110)

Optional: Show the following video depicting the restoration of the priesthood keys. "Priesthood Keys Restored in Kirtland Temple"

Refer back to the picture from the beginning of the lesson. Who is the priesthood holder that holds all the keys of the priesthood on the earth today? Russel M. Nelson is the only person on earth who has the authority (permission) from Jesus Christ to use all the priesthood keys. Others like the Quorum of the Twelve, general authorities, stake presidents, and bishops hold the keys they need for their callings in the church.
