Lesson 21: Mosiah 29- Alma 4

May 25-31
Mosiah 29- Alma 4
"They were steadfast and immovable"

Materials: scriptures, coloring page
Opening Song: Keep the Commandments (Children's Songbook, 146)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Alma 1: 30 And thus, in their aprosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were bnaked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon criches; therefore they were dliberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no erespect to persons as to those who stood in need.

Attention Activity:
Who has ever gotten a birthday card, maybe from Grandma or Grandpa? Have you ever opened it to see money inside the card? How do we usually get money? We usually have to work to get money. Is having a lot of money a good thing or a bad thing? We need to have enough money to pay for the essentials of living like our homes and our food. But, it is important to remember that all the money and the success receive are blessings from our Heavenly Father.

Lesson:

We are going to learn today about the Nephites and the effects that money had on them and their standing with the Lord. Read Alma 4:6-9. How were the Nephites doing at this moment? They were wealthy but they were also living is sin. They were spending their wealth on gold, silver, and "precious things". What kind of clothes were they buying? (Fine silks, fine-twined linen, costly apparel). We hear the term "costly apparel" often in The Book of Mormon just like we hear the term "precious things" often. The Nephites' priorities were all mixed up. They were too focused on things.

In the book series The Lord of the Rings, there is a character named Gollum. While out fishing, Gollum finds a beautiful shiny gold ring. Overtime, he becomes possessive and greedy. He pushes all others away and the ring consumes him until he becomes a grotesque creature. He calls the ring his "precious" and even commits murder to possess it. His love for a worldly possession ruins his whole life and even leads to his death.

Photographs were copyright free images taken from pixabay.com

Let us learn from Gollum's mistakes. Although it is nice to have material things, true joy and happiness can only come through living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Split your family into two groups have half our your family read Alma 4:12-14 and the other read Alma 1:27-31. How does the righteous spend their wealth? What differences could you see between what we just read in our groups and what we read before? It is not sinful to earn a lot of money as long as you use that money to help others. In fact, it is made quite clear in Alma 1 that Heavenly Father blesses the righteous with success and wealth so they can use it to help others.

Read Alma 1: 27 again. What kind of clothing did the righteous Nephites wear? (not costly, but neat and comely) This doesn't mean that we can't get dressed up or wear nice clothes, but rather that our clothes should not be the center of our attention. In the For Strength of Youth pamphlet it says, "Prophets of God have continually counseled His children to dress modestly. When you are well groomed and modestly dressed, you invite the companionship of the Spirit and you can be a good influence on others. Your dress and grooming influence the way you and others act." (pg. 6) What does it mean to dress modestly? It is important that you practice dressing modestly now, because later you will make a covenant to do so when you attend the temple to receive your endowment.

The Nephites have a complicated relationship with wealth and pride. We will talk about this even more in later chapters when we study the pride cycle. Jesus Christ and the prophets of the Lord have made it clear that our priorities should not revolve around money or "stuff". We should use our blessings to help those around us and build up the kingdom of God.

Lesson 20: Mosiah 25-28

May 18-24
Mosiah 25-28
"They were called the people of God"

Materials: video (link below, coloring page)

Opening Song: "Keep the Commandments" (Children's Songbook, 146)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 27: 25 And the Lord said unto me: Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, must be aborn again; yea, bborn of God, cchanged from their carnal and dfallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his esons and daughters;

Attention Activity:

Last week we talked about the baptismal covenant. Did you know that all baptismal fonts are  below ground? This is symbolic of spiritual rebirth. Today, we are going to talk about spiritual rebirth as we learn about the life of Alma the Younger, Alma's son.

Conversion of Alma the Younger (The Conversion of Alma), by Gary L. Kapp

Lesson:
Have your family watch the Book of Mormon video "Alma the Younger Is Converted unto the Lord" from thechurchofjesuschrist.org (about 12 min.) Alma tried to lead people away from the church. What changed Alma's mind about God? Most of us do not get to see angels like Alma or Paul. But like Alma the Younger, we all need to become truly converted to the gospel. Read Mosiah 27: 25. Being born again is a term that means being converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are born again when we are baptized and take upon ourselves the name of Christ. We renew our covenant to be "born again" every time we take the sacrament.

"Just as a cucumber is transformed into a pickle as it is immersed in and saturated with salt brine, so you and I are born again as we are absorbed by and in the gospel of Jesus Christ...And after we come out of the waters of baptism, our souls need to be continuously immersed in and saturated with the truth and the light of the Savior’s gospel" (Elder David A. Bednar, "Ye Must Be Born Again" April General Conference, 2007). In other wards being "born again" is an ongoing process. We must try everyday to immerse ourselves in the gospel, trying to live a disciples of Christ.

Alma had an amazing spiritual experience that helped strengthen his testimony. Elder Neil L. Anderson said in April 2020 General Conference, "Along with the peaceful direction we receive from the Holy Ghost, from time to time, God powerfully and very personally assures each of us that He knows us and loves us and that He is blessing us specifically and openly." We all have had spiritual experiences that have helped to develop our faith. What experiences have you had that have helped you to see that God is real and that he loves you? Read Mosiah 27: 16 . The angel told Alma the younger to remember all the things that God has done for his people. "What 'great things' has the Lord done for you or your family that you should 'remember'?" (CFMFIAF Manual)

Elder Anderson went on to say, "
Embrace your sacred memories. Believe them. Write them down. Share them with your family. Trust that they come to you from your Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son. Let them bring patience to your doubts and understanding to your difficulties. I promise you that as you willingly acknowledge and carefully treasure the spiritually defining events in your life, more and more will come to you. "

We will have times in our lives where we will have to draw from our testimony and our spiritually defining memories. These times will be easier for us to cope with, if we are able to do as Elder Bednar directs and immerse ourself in the gospel--to constantly choose to be born again every week as we partake of the sacrament. Bear your own testimony.

Closing Song: "Book of Mormon Stories" verse 3 (Children's Songbook, 118)

Alma was rebellious, and he fought against the right.
Then one day an angel came to turn him to the light.
Struck before his brethren, Alma learned humility.
Then he taught in the land righteously.

Lesson 19: Mosiah 18-24

May 11-17
Mosiah 18-24
"We have entered into a covenant with Him"

Materials: Bear pictures, baptism paper craft printout (link below), scissors, construction paper, brads, glue, crayons.

Opening Song: "When Jesus Christ was baptized" (Children's Songbook, )
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 18:13

Attention Activity:

Have two family members come to the front. Tell your family you're going to give them a clue the pair will have to act out like charades. The word is "baptism."

Lesson:

Alma was a priest of wicked King Noah who fled when Noah tried to kill him. Alma had believed the words of Abinadi and repented of his sins. He went secretly among the people teaching them the words of Abinadi about Christ, the redemption, and the resurrection. Alma and his followers came to a beautiful place called the "Waters of Mormon" and Alma taught the people there. Alma taught that in order to become "into the fold of God," they needed to be willing to do certain things.

Alma Baptizes in the Waters of Mormon, by Arnold Friberg (62332); GAK 309

Show bear picture below. The first thing they needed to do was to be willing to take upon themselves the name of Jesus Christ and "be called His people." When we become members of the church we covenant to bear His name. This means that we are representatives of Him and His gospel. We need to act like His disciples.

The next thing that Alma said they needed to do was to "bear one another's burdens, that may be light." This means that we need to be willing to help others. We need to be compassionate and kind, "willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort." As a member of the church we covenant to do these things. A good question to ask yourself regularly is how you are doing on this topic. Are you nice to your fellow men? Do you treat your family with kindness? Do you compassionately minister to those around you?

The last thing that Alma said the people needed to do was to "stand as a witnesses of God at all times, and in all things, and in all places." This means that we need to bear testimony of the gospel to others and to stand for the right like we talked about last week.

Read Mosiah 18:10. Alma said that if we are willing to bear the name of Jesus Christ, bear one another's burdens, and bear testimony, we should be baptized members of the Church. Alma's followers desired to be baptized and he baptized 204 people in the waters of Mormon.

Ask your family members who have been baptized to raise their hands. When you were baptized you covenanted with him to do the things that Alma described. Invite your family members to share about their baptisms or how keeping their baptismal covenants have helped them.

Activity:
Baptism paper craft. Link here.  Directions: print out and cut the pieces to of the paper craft. Have your family color the pieces. Glue the background with clouds to the construction paper. Make two vertical slits on the lines on the background. Take a brad and attach the Jesus and John piece to the background. Take the water piece and stick the ends into the vertical slits in the background and glue. When assembled, Jesus and John should be able to look like the are going in and out of the water.

Lesson 18: Mosiah 11-17

May 4-19
Mosiah 11-17
"A light...that can never be darkened"

Materials: rope or tape, picture of Abinadi, scenario strips (see below)
Opening Song: "Stand for the Right" (Children's Songbook, )
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 15:1 "And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down and shall redeem His people."

Attention Activity:
Invite a family member to come up and bind their hands together with some rope or tape. Have them close their eyes and say to them: "Imagine that you had been captured and put in a jail cell. You have slept on a cold hard floor for several days and your body is sore and tired. Your captors have given you very little to eat and you stomach grips and twists with hunger. Your lips are chapped and your throat is dry from dehydration. Two soldiers come to get you and drag you into a loud room filled with laughing and boisterous people. The king is sitting in the room with many priests near him. The priests start to question you. They tell you, if you will say that there is no Christ, they will let you go. What do you do? Would you be able stand and bear testimony?"

Lesson:

Whose story did we just tell? That's right this is what happened to Abinadi. He was taken prisoner by the wicked King Noah for teaching that unless the Nephites repented, they would be destroyed. They bound Abinadi in chains and brought him before the king and his priests. There, he testified unto them. Abinadi spoke of the 10 commandments, the Savior's  atonement, and eternal life. Abinadi gave his testimony knowing that he would probably die for it, and he did. But Abinadi's words had touched the heart of one of the priests of King Noah. Do you remember the priest's name? Alma believed in Abinadi's words and tried to persuade the King to release him, but King Noah tried to Alma too.
Abinadi before King Noah (Abinadi Appearing before King Noah), by Arnold Friberg (62042); GAK 308

How can we relate the story of Abinadi to our own lives? What can we learn from Abinadi's bold testimony? Sometimes it seems easier to give into the evils of this world and to let other people's opinions of right or wrong tump your own knowledge of the Truth. Abinadi did not allow his own suffering to lesson his testimony; he stood strong in his adversity. "His message was rejected fain and again. Yet Abinadi  never gave up." (Book of Mormon 2020: Come Follow Me for Indiviuals and Families, pg. 71)

Activity: Real Life Scenarios
print and cut out the scenarios below. Have each family member take turns picking a scenario and telling what they would do in that kind of a situation to "stand for the truth" like Abinadi.

- You are at a friend's house and when you two are alone, he takes out his phone and starts showing you pictures or video of pornography.

- There is a girl at school who hears you are a "mormon." She starts to tell all of your friends that you don't believe in Christ and your religion is "dumb."

- During a date (after your 16), you're watching a movie together. The lights are off and the other couple just left to go home.

- You forgot to do an assignment for school that was due today. Your teacher has warned you not to work with other students on the homework but your friend said you could copy his during lunch.

- You snuck into your older sister's room while she was out and played with the toy she had just received for her birthday. You accidentally step on it and it breaks.

- Your mom promised you a treat while you were shopping at the grocery store. But after you misbehave, she says you may no loner have one. You are angry and want a candy anyway so you stick one in your pocket. When you get to the car you feel guilty.

Sometimes its hard to do the right thing. Sometimes we have to stand up for ourselves in front of people who don't like us, but more often we have to stand up for ourselves in front of people we care about like our friends and family. Bearing our testimony and standing for truth is hard, but the Holy Ghost will always help us through it. In the For Strength of Youth  it says, "God is mindful of you and will help you make good choices, even if your family and friends use their agency in ways that are not right. Have the moral courage to stand firm in obeying God’s will, even if you have to stand alone. As you do this, you set an example for others to follow."Just like Abinadi set a good example for Alma, we can also set good examples for those around us when we stand for the right.

Lesson 17: Mosiah 7-10

April 27 -May 3
Mosiah 7-10
"In the strength of the Lord"

Materials: objects (or pictures) of a magnifying glass, microscope, binoculars, telescope; whiteboard and marker, scriptures, picture of Joseph Smith

Opening Song: "The Iron Rod" (Children's Songbook, 274)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 8:16 And Ammon said that a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have, except he should possess the power of God, which no man can; yet a man may have great power given him from God.

Attention Activity:

Show the following objects (or pictures) a magnifying glass, microscope, binoculars, telescope. What do all of these things have in common? These are tools that help people to see things that are hard to see because they are either too far away or too small.

Lesson:

Read Moses 6:36. Seers are those chosen by God to see things that others do not. Seers see the things God wants them to see. On a whiteboard or piece of paper write "seer" on the board. Read Mosiah 8: 15-18 and make a list of what Ammon says a seer is and does.

Can you name an example of a seer from the latter-days? Joseph Smith was a prophet, seer, and revelator. He did all the things Ammon teaches about seers. Read Mosiah 8:13 and compare it to Joseph Smith History 1:35. Joseph used the Urim and Thummim described in Mosiah to translate the Book of Mormon.

David Whitmer described, "Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man." (David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ (Richmond, Mo.: n.p., 1887), 12, available on Internet Archive, https://archive.org/stream/addresstoallbeli00whit#page/12/mode/2up.)

At the beginning of April, we sustained the First Presidency and the Quorum of the 12 Apostles as prophets seers and revelators. Why is it so important that we make the distinction that they are not just prophets but seers too? Ask your family what revelations have come to pass/are coming to pass since President Nelson became the leader of the church.

Bear your testimony of having a modern day prophet, seer, and revelator--President Russel M. Nelson.

Lesson 16: Mosiah 4-6

April 20-26
Mosiah 4-6
"A Mighty Change of Heart"

Materials: name tags, markers, video (see below)
Opening Song: "I Belong To the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Children's Songbook, )
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 5:7 And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.

Attention Activity:
Have each child make/decorate a name tag using their full names. Place the name tags on each child. You each have a name. Your name was carefully selected by your parents. (If you have any stories about how each child got their name you could share them or talk about specific people they are needed after.)

Lesson:
Names are important things to our Heavenly Father. We know from the scriptures that Heavenly Father knows us by name. We all have first names and family names, some of us have middle names, but did you know that when you are baptized you are given an additional name? Read Mosiah 5:8. Whose name do we take when we are baptized?

When we are baptized we promise to take upon ourselves the name of Christ. That means that we represent Him and His church. How can we represent Jesus Christ?

Activity: Role Play
Have each family member act out the following scenarios and role play how a representative of Jesus Christ would act in each situation.

You are eating lunch with your friends at school, and one of your friends keeps saying mean things about a girl in your class.

You forgot to have your mother sign your progress report at school, and it is due today. You don't want to get in trouble with your teacher, so you think about forging her name.

One of your friends tells you that they no longer believe in God. They only believe in science and things they can see.

Your little brother broke one of your favorite toys. He doesn't say he's sorry, but goes and hides in the closet.

Your sister refuses to play a game she had agreed to play earlier in the day. You are upset because you have been looking forward to it.

Your older brother didn't help you clean up before he left for practice. Now you have to do it all by yourself. You want to leave his stuff out even though you know it will be late by the time he gets home.

When you are in the grocery store parking lot, you notice a lady struggling to open up her car while carrying her grocery bags.

We have each covenanted or will covenant to take upon the name of Christ. We will forever carry His name as one of His disciples. Read Mosiah 5: 11. What does King Benjamin warn us not to do? So if we sin, we are not acting as one of His disciples. We need to make sure that when we mess up and make mistakes that we sincerely repent so that we are worthy to bear Christ's name.

Activity: Video
Watch the following clip from Toy Story. What is written on the bottom of the Woody and Buzz's feet? Just like Andy's name is on the bottom of Buzz's foot, Jesus's name is written in our hearts. We sometimes can feel insignificant like Buzz, but Jesus loves us. We are His. We belong to Him. Read Mosiah 5: 12. Jesus knows us by name and He wants us to know Him, to "know the voice by which ye shall be called." We need to always remember Him and always keep His name written on our hearts.

Lesson 15: Mosiah 1-3

April 13-19
Mosiah 1-3
"Filled with love towards God and all men"

Materials: a step ladder or tall stool, a crown, Childlike Match Game (see below)

Opening Song: "I'm trying to be like Jesus" (Children's Songbook, 78)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: Mosiah 3:19

Attention Activity:

Set the stage for learning about King Benjamin's message. Use a step ladder or tall stool to act as King Benjamin's tower and have a crown made for you to wear as King Benjamin. If you have a small play tent or pup tent have your family set it up or build a blanket fort to act like the families in tents that came to hear King Benjamin speak.

Lesson:

Monologue: (Stand on the stool and read from MSH 3:3-4 and give it some gusto!) "Awake, and hear the words which I shall tell thee; for behold, I am come to declare unto you the glad tidings of great joy. For the Lord hath heard thy prayers, and hath judged of thy righteousness, and hath sent me to declare unto thee that thou mayest rejoice; and that thou mayest declare unto thy people, that they may also be filled with joy."

Welcome to the first recorded General Conference! That's right, in The Book of Mormon, 124 years before Christ's birth the prophet, King Benjamin called all his people together to come hear him speak and proclaim the good news of the gospel.

King Benjamin gives his sermon on the atonement of Jesus Christ. What does the atonement do for us? The atonement helps us in four ways: it saves us from physical death, it saves us from spiritual death due to the fall of Adam and from our sins, it helps us overcome our weaknesses, and it helps us overcome our afflictions and infirmities. Without the atonement, there would no hope for us because we are imperfect. King Benjamin calls this the "natural man." "For the natural man is an enemy to God and has been since the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord." The natural man is who we are when we are being bad or disobedient. King Benjamin says we need to "put off the natural man" and become a saint. So how do you do that?

Read Mosiah 3:19 but stop after "becometh as a child". Who here is a child? King Benjamin says that in order to "put off the natural man" and become a saint, adults need to become more like you. Does that make you feel good? Next King Benjamin's going to tell the group how they need to be like little children. Read Mosiah 3:19 again and this time read it all the way to the end.  We can all put off the natural man and become saints by practicing childlike qualities. This should not be confused with being childish. "The Savior’s invitation to become as a little child did not include a call for childish behavior. No matter our age, we must put aside our temper tantrums, belligerent attitudes, and shortsightedness in an effort to become childlike, embracing all that is good about childhood." ("Suffer the Children to Come to Me: An Invitation to Become Childlike" comeuntochrist.org)

Activity: Childlike Match Game
Have the cards below printed and cut out onto card stock. Use these cards to play a short matching game. Each time a family member gets a match, have them share a way they can practice the trait on the card.

In conclusion, we can become a saint through the atonement of Jesus Christ as we continuously strive to become like Him. We need to have a childlike faith, be obedient, and rely on the Savior. Elder Bednar said, "It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that provides both a cleansing and redeeming power that helps us to overcome sin and a sanctifying and strengthening power that helps us to become better than we ever could by relying only upon our own strength." ("Clean Hands and a Pure Heart." Ensign, Nov. 2007)

Lesson 14: Easter

March 30-April 12
Easter
"He Shall Rise.. With Healing In His Wings"

Materials: whiteboard, dry erase marker, plastic easter eggs, scripture strips (below)
Opening Song: "Jesus has Risen" (Children's Songbook, 70)
Opening Prayer:
Scripture: 2 Nephi 25:13 Behold, they will acrucify him; and after he is laid in a bsepulchre for the space of cthree days he shall drise from the dead, with healing in his wings; and all those who shall believe on his name shall be saved in the kingdom of God. Wherefore, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, for I have eseen his day, and my heart doth magnify his holy name.

Attention Activity:
Play a round of hangman with your family using the phrase "I will be resurrected like Jesus" on a whiteboard or piece of paper. What holiday is coming up next Sunday? Why do we celebrate Easter?
Lesson:
This year we have been studying the Book of Mormon. It testifies of the resurrection of Jesus Christ just like the New Testament. The Book of Mormon provides a second witness that Christ really did die and was resurrected. Because of His sacrifice, we will also be resurrected.

Activity: Easter Eggs
Have the following scripture strips below printed, cut out, and put each one into a plastic easter egg. Hide the eggs around the room. Have your family take turns finding an easter egg and reading the scripture within the egg. Paraphrases below can be used for younger children.

2 Nephi 9:6 Resurrection is part of our Heavenly Father's Plan to overcome physical death.

2 Nephi 9:7 The atonement made our resurrection possible. Without it we would rot and crumble into the earth forever when we die.

2 Nephi 9: 16 When we are resurrected the righteous will stay righteous, and the filthy will stay filthy.

Alma 11:43 We will be resurrected to our "perfect form." All of our limbs and joints will be restored and we will maintain all of our knowledge including our guilt.

Alma 11:44 Resurrection will be for all people young and old, wicked and righteous, and then we will be judged before God.

Alma 11:45 Once we are resurrected, our bodies won't die. Our spirit and body will be joined together forever.

Alma 40:21 There is a period of time between our death and our resurrection--the spirit world.

Alma 40:21 Our bodies will be restored perfectly. Every hair on our heads will be restored along with limbs and joints. Our body will be perfected!

3 Nephi 26:5 We will be judged according to our works and have the resurrection of everlasting life or the resurrection of damnation.

What are some activities we do around Easter? (Easter parade, wear new Sunday clothes, see the Easter bunny, attend church, Easter baskets, Easter egg hunt) Easter egg hunts are a long and loved tradition. Every year little boys and girls get so excited to hunt for brightly colored eggs. The eggs often have treasures inside like candy and toys.

Easter egg hunts can help remind us of our Savior. Just like we earnestly seek the colored eggs, we should be seeking the Savior, always striving to come unto Him and be like Him. When we come unto Christ we enjoy the treasure of his infinite atonement and the joy of His resurrection. Our Easter eggs should remind us of the true treats of Easter: the resurrection of the Jesus Christ and the knowledge that we will one day be resurrected too.
